Beaded skirt in gradient-print cotton-silk
Prada • Spring-Summer 1998
-
In Prada’s sea of whites and ecrus shown for SS 1998, color came in a series of box gradient-print pieces, which included this long skirt in light panama cotton-silk.
Within the indigo-colored print Prada calls "acciaio" (Italian for steel) each rectangle gently but distinctly fades into white, forming a blurry grid from afar.
The print is further dotted with misaligned rows of bugle beads in varying sizes; the linear beading is made intentionally sparse and spaced, with some areas occupied purely by steady lines of thread.
This is Prada’s unmistakable touch of off-ness, rooted in a disregard for preconceptions of bead embroidery as having to be dense, complete, and complicated. The end result offers a lightness and nonchalance much apt for the summer collection it is a part of.
