Beaded skirt in natural slub linen
Prada • Spring-Summer 1998
-
Among Prada’s sea of whites and ecrus presented for their SS 1998 collection is this long skirt in linen, dotted with misaligned rows of bugle beads in varying sizes. These embellishments catch light with each movement of the wearer, lending a shimmering effect to the otherwise plain matte fabric.
Prada’s ever-present touch of bad taste is present in its disregard for preconceptions of bead embroidery as having to be dense, complete, and complicated, or executed only on fine, sleek textiles.
Rather irreverently, the beading here is intentionally sparse and spaced, with each set ending abruptly into steady lines of ecru thread. Moreover, it is done on linen in its most raw, tactile state, with all its knots and slubs.
