Brushstroke skirt in sheer pleated silk
Céline • Spring-Summer 2014

Known for her pared-down minimalist designs, Phoebe Philo pivots Céline’s direction for its Spring 2014 collection towards primal bold-colored brushstrokes inspired by Brassaï’s “Graffiti” series – an unexpected shift that proved to be a seminal one.
On this asymmetrical skirt, the brushstroke motif is printed on pleated silk in varying degrees of sheerness, with blacks and reds being the most transparent.
The slightly more opaque, off-white areas are further overlaid with texts from The New York Times and The Guardian, all dated August 5, 2011 (Whether or not the publishing date holds importance is anyone’s guess). The topics range from current events like the stock market and oil exploration to obituaries of contemporary figures – the common thread being that they all revolve around men and men’s affairs.
The austere, masculine subject matter injects a subtle dose of irony against the vibrant brushstrokes, and to this piece of womenswear as a whole.
