Geometric foulard in patchwork lambskin
Céline • Fall-Winter 2012

At Céline’s FW 2012 presentation, atop the outsized outerwear and pullovers which were the season’s main proposition, pops of color came through a series of multicolored foulards knotted taut at the neck. Some of these scarves were made from the expected silk twill, while others more irreverently were crafted out of leather.
Céline uses a soft paperweight lambskin for this scarf, ensuring a kind of lightness and fluidity meant to parallel its silk counterparts. Precisely cut panels of this leather are assembled to create concentric squares, each piece overlocked to the next, to form the entirety of the scarf’s geometric pattern.
This clever reinterpretation of a familiar women's accessory showcases the house's savoir-faire in leathercraft, in line with former creative director Phoebe Philo's ambitions for Céline to be recognized as a leather house during her tenure.
These leather scarves have since become sought-after collectible pieces and have been revisited by Céline as self-referential motifs in later collections.
