Skirt in woodgrain printed silk

For Céline’s FW 2011 collection, Phoebe Philo explored her fascination with the strength of cars and the seductive power of the women who drive them.
Vintage automobiles and their leather-clad interiors inspired motifs in the ready-to-wear: slim buckled leather straps on the outerwear emulated seatbelts, linear paneling on jackets resembled quilting on car seats, while inset leather accents on dresses seemed to be plucked from the seats themselves.
In a series of separates including this silk skirt, the collection’s sole print to be shown on the runway comes in the form of a rich brown woodgrain, in the vein of lacquered wooden dashboards typical of vintage automobiles.
The simplicity of the skirt’s design highlights the vivid woodgrain print. The reverse side is bonded with napped wool for comfort, and the edges overlocked in black thread.
