Belted dress in pleated silk
Prada • Fall-Winter 2002
-
In a more comparably sensual outing for FW 2002, Prada's broad use of fur, jacquard, and pleated silk for this collection evokes more conventional notions of ladylike sophistication.
On this sleeveless midi dress, an otherwise simple column of black pleated silk is punctuated by slim leather straps, each placed thoughtfully for an emphasis on silhouette.
The first strap sits just under the bust, while the second and third placed on the waist and hip respectively are both belts, freely adjustable via small metal buckles to accommodate the wearer’s shape.
The elastic collar is drawn up towards the neck, with slits on either side for armholes. The densely pleated silk which feels much like a fine translucent jersey enables the dress to appear virtually seamless as much as it is comfortable to wear.
Classically feminine in volume and proportion, one could easily draw parallels between this dress and Marilyn Monroe’s iconic pleated white frock worn in one iconic scene in her 1955 film The Seven Year Itch.
