Draped dress in fluid crepe jersey

The revelation of the female form at Céline’s SS 2017 show culminated in a striking final look: a billowy, caped carnation pink frock.
The dress is made in sheer weighty viscose crepe jersey, allowing it to move fluidly with the wearer. The v-neck bodice features gathered seams on the shoulders and waistband. The skirt extends on the back side, splitting into a two-sided cape that meets into a gathered seam.
As shown on the Céline runway and campaign imagery, the placement of this gathered seam, whether across the chest or draped over one shoulder, determines how the cape sits on the body, and enables one to quite literally conceal or reveal the body as one desires, reflecting the collection’s throughline.
The dress is finished with raw hems throughout, allowing gentle fraying on the edges to come with use. The simplicity of the garment’s design reflects its timelessness, highly comparable to similar dresses made by Roberto Capucci and Madame Grès. This piece has come to be one of former Céline creative director Phoebe Philo’s most recognizable work for the French maison.
