Car coat in felted satin
Prada • Fall-Winter 1998
-
For the FW 1998 season, minimalist silhouettes are given a futuristic slant at Prada through the use of industrial materials like plastic, silicone, and photographic film, adding visual and textural interest.
In a similar manner, silks were pre-wrinkled and pilled into a fabric called “raso infeltrito” (felted satin in Italian), as seen on this car coat. Prada deviates from preconceptions of satin (often made with a perfectly smooth and lustrous surface) to create this distinctly functional textile. Made in silk layered over a wool-linen felt base for insulation, the fabric treatment makes it somewhat future-proof, eliminating any need for ironing or any worry of snags and pills.
To highlight the choice of fabric, the design is kept minimal for this coat: a pointed collar, a hidden snap button placket, inseam side pockets, and overlocked hems. It is fully lined with a light, tonal crepe fabric.
