Flared coat in brushed wool felt
Céline • Fall-Winter 2014
-
Opening Céline’s FW 2014 show was a series of black fit-and-flare coats; the collars progressively larger with each look. This particular coat in brushed wool felt was the second in that series, made with a wide notch-lapel collar.
White buttons close the coat’s double-breasted front and continue up the chest as decorative details, mirroring contrasting buttonholes below. Frayed threads on the collar and sleeves create a fringe effect, yet the seams are cleanly finished without raw edges. A corsage in the same fabric completes the look and can be unpinned if desired.
Phoebe Philo cites wartime photographer Lee Miller and surrealist collagist Hannah Höch as influences for this season, informing the collection’s double-breasted coats and jackets oddly spliced and cut askew, finished with fringed seaming and haphazardly-placed buttons.
