Ruched dress in satin
Céline • Fall-Winter 2016
-
Céline embraced a languid softness for the FW 2016 season, shown in the ready-to-wear through fluid unstructured garments. Among them was a series of dresses made in lustrous liquid satin, all of them intriguingly worn over trousers.
The manner by which Céline employs satin on these dresses is through embracing the potential pitfalls of its use, and incorporating them as functional and visual features. Satin’s proneness to puckering and tendency to quickly crease upon initial use is adapted as pronounced ruching pressed into linear creases. Wrinkling is harnessed as a textural element, highlighting the fabric’s high-gloss finish.
The ruching falls seamlessly onto a drop-waist draped skirt with gathered sides. Concealed within them are invisible zips to convert the skirt into a slitted one. These slits create separate skirt panels which can optionally be knotted as shown on the Céline runway.
Céline’s approach permits a highly practical and nonchalant way of wearing the dress, eliminating the need for ironing or any worry of further creasing, as these innate material imperfections are encouraged with use.
