Skirt in felted satin
Prada • Fall-Winter 1998
-
For the FW 1998 season, minimalist silhouettes are given a futuristic slant at Prada through the use of industrial synthetics like plastic, silicone, and photographic film, adding visual and textural interest.
In a similar manner, silks were pre-wrinkled and pilled into a fabric called “raso infeltrito” (felted satin in Italian), as seen on this short skirt. Prada deviates from preconceptions of satin to create this uniquely functional textile, which becomes more pilled and wrinkled over time with repeated use. Made in silk layered over a wool-linen felt base for insulation, this fabric treatment makes it somewhat future-proof, eliminating any need for ironing or any worry of snags and pills.
To highlight the choice of fabric, the design is kept minimal for this piece. The interior is fully lined with a light, tonal crepe fabric.
