Much of Demna Gvasalia’s inaugural collection for Balenciaga was an attempt at translating Cristobál Balenciaga’s couture methodology into a contemporary context.

For this belted trench coat in cotton gabardine, this couture approach is demonstrated through a collar that can optionally be worn off-shoulder. This “swing” collar isn’t a styling proposition but an intended feature incorporated into the garment, achieved through precise cutting. An additional button is placed on the double-breasted front so the coat remains closed as it is worn cold shoulder.

Within the lining is a belt secured onto buttons which when secured becomes a halter, and also offers a hands-free means of carrying the coat on one shoulder.
